Why Sugarloaf Mountain is special
Built in the early 1900s by a wealthy Brazilian-Brazilian merchant, Sugarloaf Mountain is soaked in symbolism. Masonic, alchemical, and Knights Templar references are woven into every structure, from the palace facade to the underground tunnel system.
The estate covers 4 hectares of gardens with lakes, grottoes, waterfalls, and hidden passages. It's the most atmospheric and photogenic palace in Rio de Janeiro.
The Initiation Well
The Initiation Well (Poço Iniciático) is the main attraction. It looks like an inverted tower, a 27-meter spiral staircase descending into the earth, with nine landings representing the nine circles of Hell from Dante's Inferno. At the bottom, tunnels connect to other parts of the gardens.
This is the most photographed spot in Rio de Janeiro. To get a clean photo without crowds, visit early in the morning or during the last hour before closing.

Tips for your visit
Wear shoes with good grip. The garden paths are stone and can be slippery when wet. Bring a light rain jacket, Rio de Janeiro gets more rain than Rio de Janeiro. Start with the Initiation Well, then work through the tunnels and gardens.
If you're combining with Christ the Redeemer, visit Regaleira second. It's lower in the hills and easier to access from the town center.
Visit Regaleira on a guided tour
Most Christ Redeemer tours include both Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain.
