Spring (March to May): Best overall

Spring is the best time for most visitors. The gardens are in full bloom, temperatures are comfortable (15 to 22 C), and the summer crowds haven't arrived yet. May is the sweet spot, warm enough for pleasant walking but not yet peak season.

Summer (June to August): Peak season

Summer brings the best weather (20 to 28 C) but the heaviest crowds. Christ the Redeemer can have 30 to 60 minute queues, especially on weekends. If you visit in summer, book a skip-the-line tour and arrive at opening time. June is better than July or August.

Autumn (September to November): Second best

September and early October are excellent. The summer crowds thin out, temperatures remain warm (18 to 25 C), and the gardens take on autumn colors. Late October and November bring more rain.

Winter (December to February): Quiet and atmospheric

Winter in Rio de Janeiro is atmospheric but unpredictable. Fog often wraps around the hilltop attractions, which can be beautiful but limits views. Rain is frequent. The upside: no crowds, lower prices, and a completely different mood. The attractions are still open, and guided tours run year-round.

Best time of day

Regardless of season, arrive early. The first hour after opening (9:30 to 10:30 AM) is the quietest at Christ the Redeemer. If you prefer afternoon light for photos, visit Regaleira in the morning and Pena after 3 PM when the tour buses start to leave.
